Tokusatsu (特撮 ), sometimes shortened to Toku, is a Japanese term that applies to any live-action film or television drama that usually features superheroes and makes considerable use of special effects (tokusatsu literally translates as "special filming" in Japanese).
Android Kikaider (1972-73) was broadcast as a live-action television series running alongside the original manga by creator Shotaro Ishinomori, and was followed by a sequel series, Kikaider 01 (1973-74).
In 1978, Kikaider was acknowledged alongside Kamen Riders V3 and Amazon in the Sentai Series crossover film J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai vs. Gorenger
In 2011, the Kikaider Brothers made a cameo appearance in the Kamen Rider Series 40th anniversary feature film OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Riders alongside fellow Toei Company heroes Inazuman and Zubat. The original Kikaider also featured at the very end of the crossover film Kamen Rider × Super Sentai × Space Sheriff: Super Hero Taisen Z (2013), to promote an upcoming revival of Kikaider.
This revival was ultimately revealed as the film Kikaider REBOOT (2014), featuring a new incarnation of Kikaider who made a guest appearance in Kamen Rider Gaim.
