Kabutogani Enji (カブトガニエンジ lit. "Horseshoe Crab Red") is a character from Android Kikaider.
History[]
In order to defeat Kikaider, Kabutogani Enji develops the Death Ray Gun and attacks Reiko Mitsumori, who possesses the finest emerald needed as a lens for its completion. Accidentally, Mitsuko Komyoji and Hattori Hanpei are all put into a state of unconsciousness by the Kabutogani Foam, but Jiro = Kikaider appears and fights against it. However, in the midst of battle, both of its legs were destroyed, and it ended up fleeing underground in a desperate state.
Afterward, it attacks Hattori Hanpei, who was entrusted with the emerald ring by Reiko, and then goes after the Komyoji siblings, who were handed the ring by Hanpei. However, in the midst of restraining them with the Kabutogani Finishing Sword, Jiro arrives and engages in a battle.
Carrying the incomplete Death Ray Gun, it attempts to attack, but only manages to destroy the curved mirror as it is evaded. Once again, it fires the Death Ray Gun at Jiro, who is suffering from the Devil's Flute, but it is thwarted by the previously destroyed curved mirror. Not only that, the beam is reflected back, resulting in the destruction of the Death Ray Gun. Furthermore, the explosion sound blocks the flute's melody, causing Jiro to transform into Kikaider.
From there, Kabutogani Enji received a full barrage of techniques including the Kaiten Attack, Double Chop, and Denji End following the Dai Sharin Nage, resulting in its defeat.
Revived[]
It was revealed to have been revived in Episode 33. It grows a massive horn on its head, which allows it to emit destructive beams. However, due to the existence of its successor, Kimengani Red, it was deemed expendable and subsequently imprisoned. Despite struggling and demanding to be released, it was no match for Kimengani Red, who possessed five times its strength, and was easily subdued.
Due to Kimengani Red's sentiment of "Even though he's a fool, he's still my elder brother", it was not destroyed. It managed to escape by exploiting an opening. It attacked the Komyoji siblings to lure out Jiro and once again challenged him to a battle.
Supported by the Devil's Flute as Professor Gill tells him it's his "last chance", it corners Jiro. However, using the Kabutogani Foam, it covers Jiro's ears to block the sound of the flute, causing him to transform. It was pushed to the brink in a battle against Kikaider, but it was ultimately saved by Mitsuko Komyoji, who sympathized with its circumstances.
However, later on, both of them are abducted and taken to Kimengani Red. Kimengani Red tells it, "I used to think of you as a brother, but I can't protect you anymore", and informs it that it will be executed only after defeating Kikaider as a last offering.
But before that, it is told that Mitsuko will be executed, and without thinking, it stands in the way. Regardless of whether it had acquired a Buddha-like mindset, it shields Mitsuko from the shots fired by Kimengani Red's Beat Gun, and ends up being destroyed.
Power and abilities[]
It has a needle on its right arm that can be fired as Kabutogani Finishing Sword (カブトガニ必殺剣, Kabutogani Hissatsu Ken), resembling an arrowhead. The white foam emitted from its mouth, known as Kabutogani Foam (カブトガニフォーム, Kabutogani Fōmu), deprives humans of their freedom and puts them into a state of unconsciousness. It is skilled at underground activities involving digging holes. It has a human-like form with an Arab-like appearance.

Portrayal[]
Kabutogani Enji's voice was provided by Eisuke Yoda (依田 英助, Yoda Eisuke), and Eiji Maruyama (丸山 詠二, Maruyama Eiji) for revived version. Its human form was portrayed by Eddie Arab (エディ アラブ, Edi Arabu).
