Hakaider

Hakaider (ハカイダー, Hakaidā), introduced in episode 37 of Android Kikaider, is the ultimate cyborg robot created by Dr. Komyoji under DARK's influence to defeat Kikaider. With a sleek black exterior adorned with flashes of yellow lightning, Hakaider embodies formidable power and striking design.

Biography[]

Android Kikaider[]

Hakaider made his debut in the preview for episode 35. Similar to the manga version, he is a combat cyborg created solely to destroy Kikaider. In his human form, he assumes the identity of Saburo (サブロー, Saburō). However, unlike the influence of Dr. Komyoji's brain in the manga, there's no such setting; instead, the requirement for periodic blood transfusions for his brain exists. Apart from following Gill's orders and DARK Robot's strategies, he acts independently based on his own will.

As DARK's ultimate creation, crafted by manipulating Dr. Komyoji under mind control to engineer the destruction of Kikaider. Adorned entirely in black with yellow lightning motifs scattered throughout, he was designed as DARK's most potent android. As a precaution against Kikaider, Dr. Komyoji's brain is transplanted into his head, serving as a critical component. While this brain acts as a hostage to restrain Kikaider, it also holds a vulnerability: without regular blood transfusions, Hakaider dies, significantly weakening his combat capabilities. Throughout the series, there are moments where Hakaider, despite nearly defeating Kikaider, is forced to retreat for a blood transfusion.

Hakaider is equipped with an "Devil Circuit" that operates in stark contrast to his Conscience Circuit, granting him superior combat prowess over Kikaider. Not only is it physically formidable, but he also displays cunning by manipulating Masaru Komyoji, who misunderstands that Jiro killed his father. Despite its ruthlessness in combat, he disapproves of dishonorable tactics, interfering with the actions of the DARK Destruction Corps' robot, Hitode Murasaki, who attempted to hold Mitsuko and Masaru hostage, stating, "I dislike showing my back to the enemy." As previously mentioned, his sole purpose is to destroy Kikaider, and he's consumed by the compulsion to accomplish this task personally.

Burning with an obsession to destroy Kikaider, Hakaider eventually begins to defy Gill's orders (although he himself is not consciously aware of rebelling) and becomes a thorn in Gill's side. The purpose for his existence, the destruction of Kikaider, is carried out by Aka Jirai Game, causing Hakaider to undergo Gestaltzerfall in episode 42. Believing Gill (whom he thought to be his creator) was responsible, Hakaider attempts to kill him. However, he is ultimately defeated by Skeleton Musasabi, DARK's strongest and final android. In the end, Hakaider is witnessed by the resurrected Jiro as he ceases functioning, and his brain is returned to Dr. Komyoji's body by Mitsuko.

Although appearing in the sequel Kikaider 01, the Gill-Hakaider from 01 and the Hakaider from this series are considered entirely different individuals (different robots)[1].

Behind the scenes[]

Portrayal[]

Hakaider's voice was provided by Shozo Iizuka (飯塚 昭三, Īzuka Shōzō)[2]. His suit actors was Tetsuo Masuda (益田 哲夫, Masuda Tetsuo) and Kazuo Mishima (三島 一夫, Mishima Kazuo)[3][4]

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • In the insert song Hakaider no Uta, there's a line mentioning "On my right hand..." (右手のガンに…, Migite no gan ni…), yet in the series, Hakaider is depicted as left-handed. This change was reportedly made on set due to the actor portraying Saburo, Joji Mayama, being left-handed.
